If you are having trouble with your garage door opener, there are several things that could be the cause of its malfunctioning. You may be wondering if you should repair your garage door opener or simply replace it with a new one. The following is a list of possible causes and how you can fix them.

 

  • The remote for the door opener is not working.

If the remote for your garage door opener is not working, you may need to reset it. If you remove the batteries from both the remote and the garage door opener’s receiver and leave them out for half a minute before putting the batteries back in, it will reset the openers circuit boards. The remote should start working again. If it is still not working, you may be dealing with other solvable issues.

  • There may be an object blocking the door.

If your garage door is closing partially but reversing back open, there could be an object in the way which prevents the door from closing. Garage doors reverse automatically if they come in contact with an object. This function exists to prevent injuries. See if you can dislodge any object in the tracks that may be in the way of the path of the door.

  • The device’s sensitivity is set too high or too low.

If the garage door is not opening it could be because the device’s sensitivity setting could be too high or too low to register the remote control. To fix this problem, you just adjust the sensitivity to the correct level.

  • The garage door’s cables are broken.

If the garage door is not working, it could be an issue with the door’s cables or torsion springs. Torsion springs are under a lot of pressure lifting the heavy garage door. Because of all the tension pulling the garage door open, it is possible that a spring broke. If a spring is broken, it can put someone’s safety at risk. If this happens it is important to call a professional and get it repaired or replaced.
