It is incredible how far technology has come. Back in the days of old two way radio transmitters, getting into someone’s garage could have been as easy as just pressing an old remote, since the transmitters shared so many frequencies. I remember rolling under a closing door when I was kid, my dad getting so mad at me because the door could have crushed me. Looking back, it undoubtedly was a foolhardy choice for an 8 year old. Lucky for our kids today, with the advent of better technology came safety sensors, and pressure sensing on doors themselves; telling the door to go back up and greatly reducing the number of injuries caused.

In today’s market, there are so many options for doors that it can seem overwhelming; let alone trying to stay up to date on maintenance and products necessary for the door to perform its function. Here are a few easy options for you as a homeowner to make sure you’re getting the best out of your door.

  • Make sure your door is properly lubricated every six months. As an installer, and a repairman some of peoples biggest complaints come from squealing, or excessive shaking when the operator is moving your door. WD-40 works in a pinch, but your local garage door shops have specially formulated lube to make sure it doesn’t degrade your rollers. Doing it every six months, at the hottest and coldest times of the year help your door and track to stay as one cohesive unit.
  • Check if your door is ready for a Spring change. The tension systems will fail over time, and if a spring breaks it makes getting your door open very difficult. If you haven’t had a spring change in the last 3-5 years it’s about time to get it done. Most springs are rated for 10,000 cycles, which sounds like a lot until you realize most people go in and out of their garage about 3 times a day. That’s three cycles a day, and over time those add up pretty quickly.

These are the two biggest complaints, and making sure that you keep up on the maintenance of your door can save you thousands of dollars. If you want more information, or would like to schedule an appointment to get you door looked at and serviced, please contact us for more information.
